What Should I Know About Adoption?
If you like the idea of being a mother but cannot handle the day-to-day responsibilities, or you are already a mom with more than you can handle, adoption may be the answer. It isn’t an easy choice, but it is courageous and selfless.
What Is Adoption?
Adoption is the permanent and legal placement of a child by their birth parents with an adoptive couple who raise the child as their own. That child then has full rights to inheritance and lifetime family relationships.
Types of Adoptions
You have lots of choices with adoption. How much communication you want with your child and their adoptive parents determines the plan you choose.
An open adoption plan means you and the adoptive family share personal information such as full names, phone numbers, and addresses. Today, the majority of adoptions are open.
Regular contact allows you to be a part of your child’s life as they grow. You will always be a part of your child’s story, and with open adoption, you get to be the one who tells it.
Some women who choose adoption prefer to have no communication with the adoptive family or their child. If you feel this is the best choice to move on with your life, the adoption agency you choose selects the adoptive couple.
You have no contact with the couple before or after birth. Your identity remains completely anonymous.
A semi-open adoption is somewhere in between the other two plans. You can communicate with the adoptive couple and your child, but any communication you have is through a third party, like a lawyer or an adoption agency.
This plan gives you privacy while also having contact.
